plot: Tempe gets a case that hits close to home and could involve her old childhood friend. Just when discovering this Ryan breaks up with her. Now she has to figure out what happened to her old friend heartbroken.
opinion: Ryan pissed me off in this book. It was interesting diving into Tempe's past though. The case wasn't my favorite because it felt very dated.

I like Tempe Brennan, but one of the things I deplore in mystery series is the tendency of case after case to somehow involve the protagonist's friends and families. Sure, her sister is a fun character, but she's really out of place here. And at this point the reasons to keep Brennan and Ryan apart are getting pretty thin.

I did NOT like this book.
The case ends up involving child porn. I get that these books often mimic cases that Kathy Reichs worked during the course of her career, that they are crime books, and that sex trafficking and child porn are part of that. However, I could have gone my whole life without listening to a book and having that be the case that gets investigated. Things where kids are the victims are so much harder to accept, especially when reading/listening for entertainment. If you are watching a true crime documentary then you know that already, but this was unexpected. We do get some more background about Brennan and her life; we meet some childhood friends who disappeared without warning one summer. Both are alive and content with their lives. Pete has met someone and he wants to get married so he's officially filing for divorce. Ryan is having trouble with his daughter; she's a heroine addict and he and her mother agree to give the relationship a shot to provide her with some stability. So he and Brennan broke up, mostly.
This one is going to be hard to move on from, and not in a good way.

This was both a good mystery and a good insight into Tempe's childhood. I liked how she persisted in finding her lost friend and solving the mysteries of the cold cases. I look forward to reading the next book, Devil Bones.

Kathy Reichs' tenth Temperance Brennan novel, and my eighth. (I skipped a couple. Shocking, I know.)

Andrew Ryan is still the handsomest detective in Montreal, and Tempe's personal life continues to mysteriously intertwine with her forensic investigations. There are some genuine surprises, though, and mysteries left unsolved. I'd say this is one of my favorites so far in the series.

More like a 3.5 - good until the last 100 or so pages, at which point I didn't feel as invested. Me: 'just arrest some people and get it over.'

I'm sure I'll keep reading the series.. I hope Tempe and Ryan patch stuff up - totally open for spoilers if anyone knows!

I don't know why I keep picking up these books. They are all the same. I guess I just keep reading to see what happens with Temperance and Andrew Ryan. This one was pretty good - more of the same, but done well as usual.
