I had to re-read Lady Lazarus about 10 times because I couldn’t do it in one go without crying. It moved me like no poem has ever moved me before.

Muchas personas me han venido recomendando a Sylvia Plath durante varios años por su contribución a la literatura feminista, lamentablemente no he podido terminar el libro por lo incómoda que me pone el racismo subyacente en estos poemas. paso

DNF about 70/90 pages in. 1 star.
I love poetry, but this did nothing for me. The rhythm and structure was hardly there. The words itself were so randomly priced together than I got no meaning out of these poems. On the few occasions where I thought I might finally understand (let alone enjoy) one of the poems, Sylvia Plath’s blatant racism shows & turns me off the read. I heard this was accurate representation of mental illness, and as someone with several severe diagnoses I was excited to read this. It was also recommended to me by a friend from my poetry classes. However, this is the first book I’ve ever spent money on that I wish I never bought or read. I Wasted time, wasted money, and more importantly Plath wasted paper and wasted words.

I really enjoyed reading Frieda Hughes’s foreword detailing Plath’s mindset behind Ariel and the other poems in this manuscript, as well as seeing the draft versions, but Plath sometimes isn’t the most fun to read when you are exuding happiness… to oxymoron for me at this juncture in my life!
