(3.5). I struggled with the pacing a bit, as well as the romance. Loved the writing though!

underwhelming but in a safe, comforting way that's less so underwhelming and more cushioned ? Overall really enjoyable

I loved this book, I was transported into a Chinese mythical world filled with magic and monsters. I still cannot believe this is a debut novel, it blew me away. I think for me this is my perfect fantasy novel; it has lots of whimsy and magic, adventure, a strong female lead, family drama, and a love story (with the added note that I do believe this is a true “fantasy” and not a “romantasy” so if you’re reading it for the love plot-it’s not one of those types of fantasy books in my opinion). Even though it doesn’t leave on a dire cliffhanger, when I was finished I immediately picked up book two, still wanting to be a part of this world. Well done, I’m excited to watch out for future Sue Lynn Tan books.

Girl has to save her mom from the celestial kingdom (she ends up in the army to win a favor from the emperor)
It had a love triangle that I actually enjoyed because I felt like it made sense for both of these people to love her.
