This was an amazing world to visit. I loved the determination of Xingyin. She was determined to find a way to save her mother who is being held prisoner by the celestial emperor. Xingyin is forced to leave her mother and find her way in the immortal world. She becomes the companion of Prince Liwei so she can learn more about the world she is in. I enjoyed her relationship with Liwei. The adventures she goes on are beautifully dangerous. This was a fun adventure!

Absolutely adored this and will be starting the second book rjght away. Xingyin is on of my favourite protagonists I've ever read and I love everything about her character; I was never once annoued with her, what a breath of fresh air. The romantic plot lines were well done and I enjoyed them, cannot wait to see how that turns out. I'm vaguely familiar with the legend this story is based on, but everything is explained well enough that I was not confused.

I liked it a lot more than I expected. When it comes to legend retellings there have been many books that couldn't catch my interest. They would drag on. That is definitely not what happened here. It was fast paced with a lot happening. I was intrigued by the characters, although I had a hard time fully understanding the motives and actions of the main character sometimes. The book managed to hook me quite easily and I ended up devouring it quickly.

Excellent, creative fantasy romance. I felt a little distanced from the main character (I feel like we never really get to know her beyond the surface level, despite being in her head for the whole book) but I still liked her. Very much looking forward to the sequel, and I appreciate that the first book still ended in a satisfying way and not on a cliffhanger!
