An alcoholic's chronicle of hitting rock-bottom, entering rehab, and the road to recovery. He does such a good job describing the life of a hard-core alcoholic (of which most people are not aware, I'm guessing) that even having a beer was the furthest thing from my mind as I read this. Highly recommended.
Augusten Burroughs writes fast paced engaging dialogue introducing characters you remember. It's a memoir, and like Running With Scissors, engaging and an emotional roller coaster. At first I hated him, then I rooted for him, then I was hard hit by his friend's death from AIDS. His realization of how much he loved this man is heart wrenching because he pulled away and was barely able to be friends with the person because of his addiction. It's a wheelhouse fast read that made me want to read more of his books.
I relate to this book on many different levels - having had my own recovery experience, it was fascinating. But also fascinating having read and loved Running with Scissors, growing up in my own dysfunctional family, I really related. Augusten is my long lost sibling and the way he is so honest about these experiences is wonderful.
If you had a nice life, you may not be interested in these books. :D

It would be easy to say "recomend to addicts, recovering or otherwise", but I think it sums it up better to say, anyone who has hurt or had a destructive hole to fill. It's a bit of hillarious hope.
I absolutely love the author's writing style and just started reading another one of his books, Magical Thinking.
His life was/is just one huge mess of crazy and I can't get enough of it.
