I read this before Running With Scissors; I might have to re-read it now that I have some context for his quirkiness.

Going into this book, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect but after reading it, I understand how aptly titled it is. This book is a story of the author’s life lived dry, not sober. Dry is simply not drinking while sober is a whole change of lifestyle, even down to the way one thinks and approaches life. It was clear to see a relapse in the making throughout the majority of the middle of the book as the author describes many behaviors that did not seem like any real action being taken to change thoughts, people, places or things. Still, the story was enjoyable and humorous at times, but the people involved are not people most will take a real pleasure in getting to know as they did not seem like joyful or pleasant individuals enjoying their lives. For the most part, they seemed eternally miserable and dissatisfied. I can only hope they have found a peace and resolve today.

It's no great leap after reading of the author's childhood in Running with Scissors, to anticipate his struggle with alcoholism. But what was uncomfortably funny in the first book, just becomes sad and horrific in this one...like being unable to look away from a car wreck. Funny at times yes, but too serious of a subject to make light of. Too many uncomfortable, squirming in your seat moments to be an enjoyable read. Maybe it wasn't meant to be enjoyable. But it didn't seem to be a thought provoking, serious book with a message either.
