it was pretty good. although its like the sequil to running with scissors. its nothing like it. which is why i think i didnt enjoy as much becasue i was expecting something as excentric. but i enjoy the flow of how Augusten writes.

An interesting, and at times entertaining, memoir of rehab, AA, and recovery. But it was so much more. It started out in Manhattan and was so funny. It thought overall it was pretty witty. It got serious which I found good. Then it got sad, then depressing, then Thank God it ended good but was not cheesy at all. I thought Augusten did a great job reading it.
While I'm familiar with Augusten Burroughs, I haven't had any experience with addiction literature. This read is interesting and informative, while still maintaining Burroughs' distinct voice, style, and wit.
re-read number a million: this time in audio book form. I really love listening to people tell stories about themselves, and this is one of my favorite books. It was a spectacular experience
I've tried to review this book several times, but I love it so much that it makes it difficult to not just gush all over it.
I bought it on a whim, and have read it at least once a year after.
It always impresses me, Augusten always makes me laugh and cry. It doesn't matter that I practically know word-for-word what's coming, the incredible honesty and vulnerability in his writing (in this book in particular) always cuts right through me.
Highly recommended.

I listened to the audiobook of this, narrated by the author, and really enjoyed it. I love his writing style and he has plenty of stories to tell. It made me cry at some points too.
I wish I'd read this book instead of listening to the audio version; I definitely lost something without being able to concentrate on the writing. As it was, I found myself wrapped up in the story, but also insanely annoyed with him for a good 75% of the book. I didn't quite believe him, either. Not that I think he was lying, exactly... but as another commenter said, the story arc was just a little bit too tight, conversations remembered a little bit too perfectly, etc. Something about his voice sounded smirky.
But he did keep me company on a few long drives, and I'm not sorry I read it -- I just won't be picking up his other stuff in audio format any time soon.

I've always been familiar with Augusten Burroughs, but this was my first time reading any of his books. I LOVED it. Extremely messy, realistic, and heartfelt. Raced through it and finished over the course of a weekend.
