Pleasantly surprised by this one. beautiful prose throughout and romantically cruel, in a very ‘Wuthering Heights’ way. Even though it was a short read, I really enjoyed taking my time and getting lost in the tragedy of it. Would love to read more Mishima in the future.

i simply could not get past the fact that the only two women in this book are only 'developed' (can you even call it character development?) in relation to sex. yuko and kimi are purely sex objects and viewed exclusively through the protagonist's lust for them. women as multidimensional characters? no, we'll just repeatedly describe them as 'sensual' and provocative. never mind the analogy of flowers being taken away as a line of 'cold, silent prostitutes' - i had to put the book down at this point. did mishima have some harboured contempt for women? this story had potential but is supremely let down by its treatment of women.

Non l’ho compreso. La trama a mio parere non ha senso, il racconto e frastagliato e senza una conclusione
