Beautifully, beautifully written—just slightly disappointing that this slow progression of a story (even for a relatively short novel) didn’t reward me with much satisfaction as much as I expected upon completion.
The ending felt a bit anti-climatic and rushed. I didn’t even get to read the moment where Koji killed Ippei, the tension these two had near the end of the book was just screaming for something to happen—but it just cut so abruptly to the epilogue when it was then revealed that Koji killed him. I also didn’t even anticipate Yuko committing suicide with Koji too? I was so confused.
However I really enjoyed some of the philosophy that was sprinkled in there that helped me come to terms with the dynamic between Koji and Ippei— even when they both felt kind of ridiculous to me at times (Especially when reading Ippei’s gross outlook on his marriage with Yuko).
Lastly, maybe a nit picky addition—-I wished there was further development on the dynamic between Kimi, Yuko and Koji as an additional love triangle too! I felt as though there was so much potential that could have happened. There was plenty of room for a brewing conflict between Kimi and Yuko—but there wasn’t any.
5.5/10

It’s okayyy, not Mishima’s best but still entertaining.
I think it could have been shorter, might have been more poignant as a short story
