Another good book by Mhairi McFarlane.
Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and had difficulties putting it down, it did not have the laugh out loud moments of the previous books, which I missed. It did make me cry in several places instead.

Literally threw my e reader across the room at the ending. It really makes me want to give this book a poor review.

Very strong beginning, really hooked me. But then it dragged. We get a few boring side characters who don’t really get developed satisfyingly until way later in the book.
Or live interest is so interesting! And yet we get nothing. I like a good tease, but this was too much. This was boring and slow and I didn’t want to keep reading.
A little over half way into the book, things picked up and it was good again! Things were happening, our character was growing, and the ending was well on its way to being happy.
I was smiling and giddy by the end, so excited for a resolution, then turned the page… no epilogue, no secret chapter, no sequel. Highly disappointing, I’m furious truth be told.
You can tell it’s one of her earlier books and she took the feedback she received from this books reception and has never given us such a terribly vague ending since. But I’d like a formal apology and a sequel novela to make up for it.

2018 - OH GOD IT’S SO GOOD

2024 - reread in time for You Belong With Me and it gets better! Mhairi has such a way with words - she writes people you want to be friends with, and people you’d happily throatpunch, and her description of grief and the fallout of said grief is absolutely breathtaking. TEN STARS - FIVE FOR EACH READ

Ehhhhhhh. It's the bottom of my list in regards to all the books I read by Mhairi McFarlane. But I will give it to Mhairi McFarlane. The foreshadows and plot was clear straight from the beginning. She knew exactly where she wanted the book to go. Also, even though you knew where the book was going in all it's cliche-ness, it didn't feel like a cliche. It was a very natural transition from normal girl falling for an actor/actor falling for a normal girl. Probably because she alluded to the fact that actors are people too. Just there's an additional aspect/annoyance to it. Aka paparazzi/fans. Poor guy couldn't catch a break.

I really liked Elliot as a character. He really took Edie's problems with stride and the kind of maturity you would want an almost stranger to take them and really empathized with her. He seemed like a character who didn't let the fame get to him, and saw it as more, doing the thing he loved. He wasn't egotistical at all which was refreshing. I usually see in these type of books, the actor is egotistical and is always brought back down to earth by the normal person, but it wasn't the case here. That's probably why this love story felt so natural and not as cliche.

The friendships Edie had...and clearly I'm talking about Hannah and Nick. Not her London friends. Pshh. Those losers/followers/hacks can stay over there. Hannah and Nick were amazeballs and I loved reading about their friendship and loved the scenes where they all got together. Life is a s*** show and you always need your friends around. Margot was an absolute pleasure to read and it was sad to see her go. But I'm glad Edie met her. She was meant to be in her life for even just a moment.

Can we just also talk about the whole wedding kiss scenario which was the main part of this extremely long book? Currently, in pop culture right now, there's something going around called "micro-cheating." Jack was a clear micro-cheater. He embodied that persona to a T. TO A T. That is, until he kissed Edie at the wedding. Edie, my girl. I agree with everyone else that you were way above his capabilities in girlfriend material and I'm glad you saw that yourself when he came crawling back at the end thinking he'd be taken with open arms. Very egotistical dude, considering we're dealing with famous people in this book who were not at all. And I hate how we, as women, always blame the other woman. But Edie was a single girl with no attachments to anyone. Charlotte, you knew this. But it's typical for women to side with their boo. I've seen it done all the time. So for Charlotte to allow and acknowledge bullying and hate...like girl. That should have all been directed to your man. ALL OF IT. I get that you were hurting but shoooooooooooot. Charlotte's best friend Lucie is a be-yotch. I love how Edie confronted her to her face. It was one of the best scenes of the book. I was clapping along with the other people at the restaurant.

When it came to Edie's family and that whole dynamic, I understood why it was happening from the beginning so it was nice for it to come full circle at the end. The only character in the book I didn't like too much or understand as much was Meg. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the character was built too hard at being one way, that it didn't make sense altogether.

Overall, it's a decent read. A little too long for my taste.

My Star Rating:3 out of 5 Stars

This was a strong 3.5 star read I rounded up to 4 stars. Biggest issue is that some characters read like cliches (Louis) and also Edie was a hot mess. It's fine if you are a hot mess, but she stayed a hot mess for a good majority of the book. Her being angry that an A-list star wasn't trying to get with her was just exhausting at some point. I thought parts of the book were funny and some sad (her discussing what happened to her mother and how that affected her family). I did like how things ended up, but wish that she had wised up sooner to the character of Jack who practically had "I am a wanker" tattooed on his forehead.

"Who's That Girl" follows Edie as she attends the wedding of two of her colleagues. We don't know why Edie is sad, but eventually it all comes out. When Edie is found kissing the bridegroom the fallout from work and her social media is nuclear. When her boss gives her a chance to write an autobiography with the new hot English actor she jumps at the chance to get away from work even though it means returning to her hometown and memories she like to forget. Most of the big is Edie being told by her two oldest friends that the guy she thought could be the one was a liar and manipulator. And then Edie starting to catch feelings for her subject, Elliot.

Edie...Edie has zero spine. Seriously, she just goes along to get along and even though her supposed best friend Louis at work is nasty to her, she just puts up with it. Seriously that is Edie's whole thing. She puts up with things unless it's dealing with her sister being mean to her, that she won't put up with. I wanted to feel sorry for Edie, but I just couldn't. Emotionally cheating is still cheating, and I am glad that the book also looked at her actions and didn't let her off scot free. The cyber-bullying aspects of things was awful though and McFarlane did a great job of showing a toxic work environment and how social media has become the Devil's playground.

The secondary characters such as Elliot didn't do much for me. He was fine, I just think that having her jump into a relationship felt really strange after everything she was dealing with.

The writing at times was funny, but honestly I wanted to look away a few times due to the cringe factor in certain places.

The ending was really good and ends on a teaser which surprised me. I liked it though, so no complaints about that.
