Characters: programmer with ADHD, SEAL with injuries in rehab to go back to active duty
World Building: PT, project management
Plot: internal, growing to trust
Sex: steamy
Read another: Yes

I listened to this in less than a day, getting a lot of knitting done. I've really liked this series, and I like the lead in to the Off Base series. I felt like Josiah's character could have been more fleshed out, but Ryan's issues were always going to take up most of the space.

3.5 Stars.

So, in a typical me move, I read Albert’s entire, “Out of Uniform,” series before reading anything in this one. The, “Out of Uniform,” series is a spin off of this series. In an even more typical move, I picked book three of this series to read first.

kinda boring, but very body positive approach, a queer couple featuring an amputee and a neuroatypical...
nice lessons on communication and such, some problems, but not that many. not super good or thrilling though

description

This book was a treat. I wasn’t expecting the depth that I got, and I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did.

This book is told in the third person, with dual POV, but the “problem” is that the POVs are not clearly indicated. This wasn’t a huge drawback or anything, but sometimes, especially when the characters were together, it was hard to tell which POV it was from the start. With that said, I did enjoy the writing.

Both characters were like nothing I read before, and I absolutely loved that. Josiah was a young guy, struggling with his ADHD. This was completely unique, because having a little experience with people with this disorder, it was great to read about his challenges, and the difficulties he found in such simple tasks as paying the bills, or even remembering to eat. He’s growth was tremendous, because he has to go from “one of the guys” to a real project manager, and while it took him a while to get a hang of it, he does get there.

Ryan was a real surprise… I wasn’t quite expecting him. It’s the first book I’ve ever read with his kind of injuries, and I not only loved that, but also how the book dealt with the psychological effects of it. He also has an amazing growth during this book, going from someone who loses his whole identity and needs to be needed, to someone who learns more about himself and what he can still be and do with his life.

The relationship between Josiah and Ryan was great, and I particularly liked how Jos always looked at Ryan – you’ll get what I mean. They were really there for each other, and even though their attraction is there from the start, their feelings develop through time, even with them living always far apart. They truly become each other’s best friends before becoming boyfriends, and that’s the goal, a relationship based on friendship.

This book is very character driven, and even the conflicts and plot points have to do with the growth that both characters need to do. And I liked this.

All in all, this was a great book, and I loved this couple, though I honestly couldn’t identify with either of them… and maybe that’s why I only gave this story 4 stars. I do recommend it big time, and it now made me curious to read the rest of this series.

Have you read this book? Would you be interested in it? Have you read any book in which a character had war injuries?

What I liked about this book:
-The characters and what they were each going through seemed relatively real and respectful.
-The characters themselves. I loved Josiah from the start. He was awkward, but very sweet, endearing and genuine. Ryan had to grow on me, but I felt like he truly went through a journey.
-The story for sure. I do complain about the miscommunication further below, but overall I loved the meet cute, how the guys handle a long distance friendship, and the fact that they develop a friendship before the romantic relationship. And then once they admit their feelings, they’re soon all in and not only commit to each other, but work on the issues they’ve each been avoiding.

What I didn’t like:
-Jos’ ADHD could have been better explained because many people just associate ADHD with a kid getting to hyper and it can be so much more. I also never felt like Ryan truly understood it.
-The miscommunication! This is a personal pet peeve of mine. It’s one of my least favorite things in a romance as it creates a lot of avoidable drama. Some of it totally made sense with Ryan’s stubbornness, but I wanted more out of the story than two adult men who couldn’t talk things out.

So overall this was 4 stars for me. I really enjoyed it. I haven’t read any other book from this series and thought it was totally fine as a stand-alone. I do plan on going back to the previous books, but I plan on reading her military series first. I’ve been wanting to read it, but was encouraged to read this book first. I definitely recommend this, as well as the author’s Hotshot series which is my favorite of hers so far.

Can't really say anything against this one.
For me, it just had about everything in there.
Background on the family, some drama, cool Friends (would have loved, though, to have them in more chapters), chemistry, romance, character development (without the help of the better half),..

No really I loved this.

Plus, there was one nerdy reference in there that reminded me of some other boom or movie and I adored it. ;-)
