Good story and hot sexytimes but VERY emotionally intense.

I chose this book as an Amazon First Reads because Fourth Wing is just too high fantasy for me, and I was curious about this author. I glanced at the reviews to see what people were saying about the book and was very intrigued by the relatively high average rating yet so many 1 star reviews about the choice of the setting and the unlikable characters.

As a civilian, I do not have firsthand experience of what being in the military and in an active war zone is like. Setting the present-day story in such a dangerous place definitely ups the stakes tremendously. Izzy's naivete about the severity of the situation in Afghanistan causes her to make many unnecessarily dangerous decisions, of one which being to
Spoilergo to great lengths to "save" her sister, who has chosen to be there voluntarily and did not asked to be saved. Izzy is convinced that anyone who decides to risk their own safety by going to a place like Afghanistan has no regard for their own safety and is making the wrong decision, which is a very narrow-minded and self-centered way of thinking.
So in that regard, the premise is quite flawed.

I did not like the way the backdrop of the war was used in an inconsistent way. At times, the risks and dangers of the situation was taken very seriously, but at other times, Nate and Izzy's relationship took precedence, which seemed extremely unprofessional and put many people's lives in peril. The sex scenes were also more smutty while I prefer a more sensual take.

Nevertheless, the story is a compelling one, starting with the extreme circumstances of how they first met, and the unexpected ways in which they run into each other throughout the years. I enjoyed the alternating timelines, and I was eager to find out what exactly transpired between Izzy and Nate for them to have formed such a contentious love/hate relationship.

fun story idea! i usually can’t stand switching povs but it was tolerable. writing just felt slow throughout the first 80% of the book, then the ending felt a tad rushed. the back and forth didn’t come across as slow burn or anything, it just felt a little like a chore to read at times.
