My four-year-old thought it was strange, and I'm inclined to agree. The story was simple, I appreciated the 90 degree rotation, and loved the ending reveal, but the illustrations were not my cup of tea.

The illustrations in this book are so stunning I want to purchase a copy, cut them out, frame them and hang them on my walls. This is a quietly philosophical book that imagines how the lion statue at Place Denfert-Rochereau came to end up there.

An absolute artwork.

This is the imagined story of the lion in the Place Denfert-Rochereau in Paris. The book is about 15 inches by 11 inches. The huge size is definitely part of the charm. There are plenty of interesting details to notice in each illustration, as well as a few landmarks, and the text is brief and nice.

A lion leaves his grasslands and goes to Paris. At first, he feels lonely and ignored, but then, as he wanders the city, he begins to discover the magic of the city and make friends.

I love the part-drawing/part-cutout illustrations in this oversized book. The author perfectly captures all the feelings of a new visitor to Paris in this story.

The size (large) of this book is why we picked it up at the library. The collages are kind of strange but intriguing, but the story itself feels very disjointed. It's a fun book because it flips/opens at the top instead of the size. Maybe this in French the text makes more sense?
