Almost as good as the first book, but in the end it was relying on the deus ex machina a bit much. Still an enjoyable book with great characters.

Wow. Just terrible writing. Worst I can remember reading. Almost the whole book consists of sentences containing 8 words or fewer. Such a limited vocabulary and made up of such clichéd and base use of language. Not a single character has any colour or nuance to them, just being a frame to hang the current situation on. The effect being that nothing feels like it has any weight or consequence, throughout. After reading Prince of Thorns I wondered why no one online talks about the Broken Empire books when discussing good fantasy series. While 'Prince' was simple and straightforward, I felt it was an exciting entry to a grimy and unforgiving world. After now reading 'King', I understand why no one talks of these books when discussing quality fantasy. Even the cover recommendations on this book are actually praise for the first book. A fact that only become known to me when, about halfway through the book, I started to believe it impossible they could have thought those things about this book. Unfortunately, in an effort to expand my experience of grimdark books I bought all 3 Broken Empire books at once. So, I have that wholly undesirable prospect of the 3rd book to consider in the future. A long time in the future. If I don't discard the series entirely at this stage?
I kept getting confused on when and where the story was happening. Maybe that would have been different if I wasn't doing the audiobook. I got to a point where I was confused about the characters' goals and I was just kind of bored. There were some great lines though! Maybe I'll try this series again another time.

Loved it. As good as the first book and I seriously cannot wait for book three. I will say it again, this is such a refreshing slant on fantasy that is so much more gritty than the flowery old school fantasy. You will not be disappointed.
Vyborna kniha, ktora pokracuje tam kde posledna skoncila.
Vobec nezavidim prekladatelovi a editorovi, co tu scenu pravdepodobne museli rozpitvavat do detailov.
