Kiley Reid's second novel is even better than her first, which was quite good. But I think I prefer this one because of how unexpected it is. The beginning seems to meander with no clear purpose but then everything falls quietly into place. She has a real gift of transforming the mundane into something wholly not. It's magical, even with the acidic undertones here.

I didn't really know anything about this going in, and when it started I was a bit confused where it was going, though overall it was pretty good.
There is not much of a plot I felt like, it is more telling the experiences of these 3 people at the University of Arkansas and some of their life before.
A lot of the characters I had been questioning how I felt about them. Overall this was interesting, and even though I only gave it 3 stars, I may need to return to it someday.

A fun read that featured and highlighted an atypical queer love arch (where Millie realizes she might be bisexual), which I can deeply appreciate! The novel was fun and fast and furious! The emotional roller coaster of both main characters -- Millie and Agatha was both frustrating and also adventurous mainly because I could see myself in Agatha's maturity of "Look at Millie, she has financial and life goals and that could be viewed as desirable" especially when you've come from a lavish and extravagant relationship where the other person didn't seem to care too much about their money and was spending exorbitantly. Also I can appreciate that Millie didn't have your traditional "I've always known I was queer" story arch and it wasn't until she found herself blabbering to Agatha that she realized she's bisexual / queer!
Another frustrating part was that Agatha and Millie knew better (which I am going to ask loosely here -- does that matter when you're lustful?) And I think that in exploring what that means, it helped generate more thought processes about what love and being in good relationship means. The fact that they snuck around and in the back of Agatha's head, she knew she shouldn't be sleeping around with a student, granted the student was older than most, was agonizing because I also questioned if this was right vs wrong? But the feelings of attraction can be too strong for reason sometimes.
Also made me question the point of research and the ethics of it all. The fact that Agatha was using the lives and stories of college students to publish scanty (almost smudge) pieces about their privilege and entitlement was tantalizing but also not super great! The lack of care that Agatha, a grown ass white woman who should definitely know better, was implementing with these young girls -- even though the young girls were super annoying and beyond rude and disrespectful-- I can't justify one's poor decision-making skills for clout even if they were raising awareness of someone else's bad and privileged opinions.
It was a fast and fun read, so I would recommend!
