Dragged on a bit for my liking.

3.25 stars rounded down. I really wanted to like this more than I did. I didn’t guess the mystery at least and I liked the (many) characters, but it was a slog to finish.

For fans of the TV show, 'Last of the Summer Wine,' this story starts with an unsolved murder in a home of seniors. Swann combines wit with compassion about all the characters resulting in a story of incredible depth. Inspirational. I want Agnes's wardrobe and need her fashion advice on color red lipstick works for the older woman.

Not in the right mind frame, seemed nice, but slow.

This book wasn't for me which doesn't mean other people won't enjoy it. I am a fan of Richard Osman's books but this was very different. Old people yes, but this time very very old, almost senile characters. There was a good story buried in here but too much time given over to the endless eating of biscuits, struggles with memory and hips and going up and down a stair lift. It was also supposedly set in England but it didn't seem like it, more a bizarre fictional space. Not many English homes have coal cellars which also gave it an unreal air. The rapid transformation of this space also seemed incredible considering the heavily documented limited capabilities of the group. Would like to have known more about the residents but their back stories were only alluded to as they ate more biscuits and cake. And a plea to all authors. Please stop talking about steaming cups of tea, or steaming bowls of soup. The word is turning up everywhere. The only time my tea steams is when the heating is broken!!!

Why do I love this genre of elderly killers and detectives so much?

Leonie Swann is one of my favorite writers, even though she has only one other book published in English. Much like Three Bags Full, this is a meandering cozy with a dash of viciousness and a warm hearted center. It’s completely charming, clever and creative.

Touching, inclusive, positive, if not realistic, portrayal of the elderly.
