It’s a beautiful little book and I really identified with Lóri, but I have mixed feelings about Ulisses and the ending.
it is difficult to write a review straight after finishing a book, and more difficult to put into words my thoughts around any of lispectors writing. nonetheless this book has had an impact on me that compels me to write something of it.
clarice’s use of language created an observation of the characters for the reader. there is a gap between you and connection with the characters where sometimes meaning of their actions was lost on me. her characters are individuals outside of the readers influence, and their depiction of love and falling in love while enduring complex inner turmoil was portrayed beautifully.
i often found it difficult to like Ulisses. i found him somewhat arrogant and sexist in his ways of ‘teaching’- however such is to be expected of a philosophy lecturer. the last 50 pages of this book turned that around for me. Lori begins to step into a world of love despite her fear, thus finding her ‘I’ whereas Ulisses is forced to realise no philosophical explanation saves him from the feeling of being lost with no clear path in love. They are both forced to live in the uncertainty that is human connection and love in a way that truly equalises their experiences.
the language lispector uses is forever beautiful and i’ve never been let down by anything i’ve read of hers, and i doubt i ever will be
