It is hard to review this without being glib, but I simply did not find the man or the relationship at all compelling. I could not understand what it was about this particular individual, or these circumstances, that effected such a great change in the speaker. As a result, I felt rather like I was listening to a friend tell me about a relationship whose import I could not be convinced of. I will certainly read more Lispector and I only picked this up on a whim, but it was not the best introduction. Still, she is obviously a strong writer.

“A human being’s most pressing need was to be a human being.”

if you asked me what I thought about love and life I’d hand you this book because Lispector somehow writes how I think (but infinitely clearer and more poetic). what is to love and to be loved if not discovering how to navigate and be worthy of life itself?
