One of the best in this series. Very heartbreaking and hard to read at times, but one of her absolute best.

The one where a family was murdered and a nine year old girl was hidden and is the only witness.

This one is a heartbreaker. Poor Nixie was getting a drink when her house was broken into and her family was murdered. She hides until the police come and Eve is the one who finds her covered in her parents blood. Nixie attaches herself to Eve and Eve takes her to the safest place she can think of - home.

Seeing Eve around a child was a lot of fun.

“For real?”
“No, for false. Jesus, kid.”
“You’re not supposed to swear in front of me.” Nixie informed her of this, quite primly.
“Then turn around so I can swear behind you.”

The investigation was interesting, but it took a backseat to the drama of taking care of a nine year old.

And I’m going to leave you with this gem.

“I want children with you, Eve.”
The sound she made brought on a quick and easy grin.
“No need for the panic face, darling. I don’t mean today, or tomorrow, or nine months down the road. Having Nixie around’s been considerable education. Children are a lot of bloody work, aren’t they?”
“Big duh.”
“Emotional, physical, time-consuming work. With undoubtedly amazing rewards. That bond you spoke of, we deserve to have it. To make it, when we’re ready. But we’re not, either of us, ready. And we’re not equipped to parent a girl nearly ten. It would be like—for us, anyway—starting a twisty, laborious, fascinating task somewhere in the middle, without any time for that learning curve.”
He stepped to her again, laid his lips on her brow. “But I want children with you, my lovely Eve. One day.”
“One day being far, far in the future. Like, I don’t know, say a decade when . . . Hold on. Children is plural.” ?

This was book number 20 in the In Death series. This one seemed a little longer than usual, I spent nearly my whole long weekend in Hawaii reading this one. A nine year old girl was the only survivor of a home invasion that left her parents, brother and best friend dead. No one knows why this family was targeted, and it kept me guessing the whole time. Once I found out who it was and why, the urgency left the book and I took a break to read another. I came right back after and finished this up. I love how caring the characters are of each other. Good, solid book and I’m ready to keep reading the series.

Great balance in this one with the case vs personal, and a real doozie of a case this time, too.

I always enjoy these books, I am kind of glad she didn’t immediately turn all maternal when caring for a kid like most books do. She kept her same personality.

Nine years old Nixie's had been turn upside down. All her family and her best friend have been killed by strangers and Nixie is the only witness left. But this is not a simple burglary and Eve Dallas quickly realizes that there is much more at stake ...
As usual, J.D. Robb offers us a strong emotional book with hilarious moments but also moments which break our hearts. It's rare that there are children in Dallas' investigation and often these are horrible and painful moments but there, even if there were hard times, there were also moments of joy, surprising moments and also very funny moments =D
In short, a book that is worth the detour ><

I call this, 'The One With The Kid'. When I first started reading the In Death series I was hopelessly behind. As a result, this was the newest book in the series at the time (at the time of writing this, I am reading In Death 28).

For some reason I was desperately afraid the first time around that they were going to use this book to give Dallas a kid. Fortunately, no such thing occurs and only then do I remember that In Death is very much like my favourite Procedural shows on tv. It might look like a lot is happening, but really, no, there isn't.

Dallas becomes the unwilling guardian of a young girl who has become the witness of her family's assassination. I can only assume that I finished this book because when I checked it in the reader, it was on the last page. However, I cannot remember any of the details lol so maybe I didn't finish the book?

What a roller coaster this book was. I really liked the character Nixie. I hope she makes future appearances :)

This book gutted me. Each and every book in this series just gets better and better.

Eve and Roarke both are out of their element when Eve brings a child into their home for protective custody. Nixie broke my heart. But I loved how she could pick things up with Eve. Roarke comforting her brought a tear to my eye. But nothing compared to the tears that I shed when they took her to see her family one last time. My eyes are getting watery just writing that.

Summerset, Roarke, Eve, Baxter, Trueheart, Feeney, McNab, Peabody, Whitney, Mira...this team is AMAZING. Seriously, this is hands down one of the best series out there.
