I was not expecting this for the second book but thank good this book happened. I surprisingly loved it more than the first book. First of all there was way more romance which made me happy and Elisa was less annoying in this one. The ending surprised me a little bit but I think it’s going to turn out nice in the next book. I could not put this book down! I got caught up in it and had to keep reading until I finished.
Hector is easily my favorite character and I was super glad that there was more of him in this book. I was a little nervous even starting this series because there’s a lot of religious stuff in it and I don’t really like reading about all that but this book proven me wrong. As much as I don’t like religion in books (not that there’s anything wrong with it) this book really needed it and I’m really happy with it.

This is probably the best sequel in a trilogy I've ever read. Sorry, Catching Fire, but you gotta step aside for The Crown of Embers because it slayed me. It kept me on the edge of my fucking couch for nearly twenty four hours. I am so impressed with how the plot is so interesting and fast paced but it doesn't make you feel like it's hurried, but rather intricate and deliberate.
Elisa just climbed onto the top of my favorite female characters and nothing WILL PUSH HER BACK!

This is possibly the best second book in a trilogy that I have ever read
Still an absolutely amazing world. And Elisa is an amazing main character. Also: I loved the romance.
Different genre than I usually read. Clearly geared towards teen girls. I was slightly invested in the characters, but found myself not being able to put the book down for the last 50 pages.
I loved the first volume of this trilogy, and was looking forward to the second one. Strangely I did not finish it for a long time. I have no explanation for this, as I like it very much. The story, the main characters, the developments... It is all done very well and I really, really like the heroine, who stays very human and approachable through all her trials.
I didn't love the first book in the series, and wasn't in a hurry to read this one. But I saw it on the returns cart the other day, so I grabbed it. And I'm glad I did. I liked it a great deal more than the first one! It didn't have some of the fat-related problems I had with the first one (though there were still some), and more importantly I actually BELIEVED this story. In the first book, I often felt like I was being told to feel something, without actually feeling it. Example, the romance - I never felt any heat between Elisa and (spoiler) Humberto. At all. In fact I never particularly cared about him. But in this one, I was totally on board with the romance. In other ways, too, it was more believable. In this one there was evidence of Elisa being smart, or even of her weaknesses, instead of just being told that she was smart or whatever other trait the reader was being told she had. All in all, the plot flowed much better and felt more natural, the characters were more likable, and I was far more invested in the various outcomes.
Anyway. Much, much better. Looking forward to the third one.

5 out of 5 glorious stars and more because....My frrrrrreakkkiinng emotions. Ugh. Next book please, now. Hurry. (I can't believe I finished this in two days, it's been a while since I've done that for a book well in January I read Unite Me in two days but STILL this has more pages) It was one of those books where I couldn't stop thinking about it when I wasn't reading it, and I got nervous and was jumping with nerves to know what happens next. I am so emotional with this book, I KNEW IT THOUGH, I KNEW IT!! Hector!!!! Grrr. But Elisa is such a powerful woman and she is rockin' and if you don't read this now, then figure a way. I need the next one, come on school library!!! For now, to Crown of Midnight!! (I guess I'm in a crown mood, first The Crown of Embers lol) Anyways, READ THESE BOOKS!!
I read the first in this trilogy a few years ago and loved it. I picked up the second, and began reading, and was instantly hooked. I thankfully remembered enough of the first one that I was able to follow along. Really like the atypical heroine, and although some of the plot points are contrived, it held my attention throughout, and I immediately had to start book 3 due to the cliffhanger at the end of book 2. Recommend to anyone who likes fantasy (especially Fantasy YA) and heroines who aren't always pretty.
