Gahhhhhhh!! Why did it end that way????!!!!! Elisa was this close, this close to finally be with Hector officially, and yet... Why?? What have you done to me, Rae??? And the godstones really intrigued, everything was very religious and political, that I was at edge all the time. I couldn't stop reading. I feel so much for the characters, I love all of them, especially Elisa and Hector, this dynamic duo. Storm's personality intrigues me, haha, Hector actually reminded me of a young Lazarus. An easy 5 stars!! I'm in love with this series!!!
This sequel was so good. I enjoyed it so much more than the first book and I can't wait to see how everything unfolds. Because I'm shippin' and it better not sink.
Maybe closer to 3.5

I didn't think this would be better than the first book because, lets face it, the second book in a series usually doesn't compare to the first. I was completely wrong though, this book was better than the first and I think I love Elisa even more now. Also can someone please get me a Hector?
Very tempted to give this five-stars. I can't wait for the last book!! Review to come.
Hell yes. This is so much better than book one. Which is saying a lot for the second book of a trilogy. Elisa really comes into her own here, in a much more thorough and believable way than in the first book. The characters are more fleshed out, and although it started slow, the book picked up pace quickly and flew by. We learn a little more about the world, and magic, and politics. The love is more believable too. I liked that there are actual sacrifices in this series. And actual character growth. I like the Elisa is able to a be a queen first and Elisa second. She puts the great good first, whether it's regarding Hector or other stuff. I like how we see her relationship with Ximena change. And the ending. Holy crap the ending. I love the way stereotypes are turned on their head. I cannot wait for the next book.
I know I ranked the first book higher because it was so refreshing, and I loved the drops of worldbuilding and the variation of characters and how they reflected the society they were living in. Elsa's transformation, more internal than the physical, was fantastic, and that development was so well earned.
The second book feels like a second book; it is very much one of transition as Elsa is adjusting to ruling life without Alejandro, and her new feelings for Hector, and as relationships shift. My favorite things were the buildup up the Hector/Elisa relationship and how the narrative did not completely shy away from difficulties inherent in the pairing, and the tension in the Ximena relationship as Elsa gains her footing more and starts to behave more independently.
Those hints of worldbuilding that I loved were not really built on that much, and that was a disappointment. It's just a consequence of the storytelling. I also found the representation of the antagonist nation hazy, but I did like the introduction of Storm, just to give a glimpse of the people, even if he is an outcast.
I did enjoy reading this book; the prose is clean, and descriptive enough without being overdone; but there are issues with balance that prevented me from ranking it as high as I did the first.

I really like this series. I like that Elisa is a queen instead of a princess & I just really like it for a lot of reasons. they need to save hector asap and also rosario better b safe or i will b v sad. i rlly liked that at the end she realised she didn't need some magical power to help her and that she could actually just trust herself to do it. that was good, and it showed she was a good person when she saved storm. i like hector lots. man this series is just really good esp coz elisa is a plus-size (maybe not as much anymore but she's above what is considered 'desirable' weight) p.o.c. it's good to see different kinds of heroes in books.
