MUCH better than the 1st book.

How fun is it to read a book, love it, and find out that it has a sequel...that's already been released?? So fun. I liked this book even more than the first one. But now I have to wait for the next one.

As the king lies dying, he proclaims that his wife Elisa is his heir. Just seventeen and only recently arrived in the country, Elisa has much to learn and prove in order to maintain her hold on her queendom...and even harder, keep her country safe from the Invierno invasion.

On the one hand, Elisa is very practical. She thinks through logistics. She understands the importance of pageantry and appearance, and also recognizes when tangible demonstrations of power are necessary instead. She's well-educated and outrageously intelligent. On the other hand, all those qualities makes it difficult for me to think of her as seventeen. She's so constantly level headed and controlled, she always makes the wisest and most moral choice, and she's always proven right in the end. It felt unbelievable and by the end, I was kinda rooting against her because she was so annoyingly perfect. She travels with the desert tribes for a few months and now she's the bestest at putting up tents ever and her traveling companions literally stop and stare at how well she does it. She's in this new kingdom only a few months and she's already more aware of the economies, common people, trade routes etc than most natives. She's the most magicalest Chosen One ever. On and on.
Also, the number of times the book contrives to put her and her love interest into enclosed or private spaces in which they have to press their bodies against each other boggles the mind.

The world in which all this takes place is pretty cool. I like that we're two books in and still only getting hints of how all these kingdoms came to be. I get the impression that one or possibly both of these peoples are the descendants of interplanetary colonies. I'm not sure whether I'll ever find out; I find Elisa and the plot contrivances annoying enough that I might not pick up the next book in the series.

Absorbing, challenging, detailed and heart-warming.

Elisa is a feisty and brave hero. She has a lot on her plate and needs to finds a way to become the queen she needs to be. Along the way, she learns much about herself and the people who protect her.

Highly recommended.

This book built on the world of book 1. We not only get to see other areas of the universe Carson is building, but we get to understand the magic of it better. I can't wait to see what the conclusion is going to do. It's heartbreaking. I love this series.

LISTEN TO ME. THIS IS INCREDIBLE. 100x BETTER THAN THE FIRST ONE. even if the first one was nearly perfect. like wow, it just left me speechless. (reading this while listening to epic pirate music is a great idea)
THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS INCREDIBLE???? Elisa is definitely one of my favourite protagonists and I'm so proud of her. my favourite parts of her character development were the first time she realised that ximena always did what she thought was best for her, and then at the end when she dismissed her. like. wow. she's grown so much. i loved the political intrigue??? elisa is so smart, her quick thinking surprised me so many times. i also really appreciated the magic in this, it was very great.
and the religious stuff was toned down a great deal, which i was glad about. not like i hated it in the first book but......... eh. there's a part when they're on a ship and we meet hector's brother AND IT WAS SO NICE I REALLY LOVED IT. i really like pirate arcs and just... things that happen out on the ocean.
and then there's hector, who finally got rid of his annoying mustache and he loves elisa and he is amazing and i love him. WE FINALLY FOUND OUT MORE THINGS ABOUT HIM YEEEEES!!!!! AND I LOVE THE WAY THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS DEVELOPING SHSHSHSHSHSH.
storm was also a very interesting character, i really loved him at the end, just the end in general with the gate and gatekeeper and whatnot was very nice and not at all what i expected. aND ALSO TRISTAN, HE IS A CINNAMON ROLL WHOM I LOVE. :'))
the only minor sort of kind of complaint i have about this was that.... there were so many parts that reminded me of akatsuki no yona. especially some interactions between elisa and hector, and elisa's characterisation. i noticed it at some point like halfway through, and then i just kept noticing it every other chapter. it's not a bad thing, just unexpected. and like. weird. and makes me wanna read AnY again. heh.
but yes this series seems to just keep getting better and i can't wait to see where it is going.

Definitely better than the first, which is refreshing, since sequels have been majorly disappointing me lately. More excitement, more getting to know characters, and a better romance, woo.

4.5

I loved this book so much! More than the first which is unusual, but everything grew and became better. I love the world and the characters. Elisa is a heroine I can see myself in and I root for her at every turn, at victories and heartbreaks. I've loved Hector since the first book, and I love Mara even more. I loved the storyline as well. As Elisa grows up and grows into her role it isn't easy, but the book is fast-paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this book.

This sequel was okay.
I did not remember what happened in the previous book, which made the beginning of the book a bit hard to read. Also the beginning was quite boring..
The ending was definitely really good!
Excited to read the next and last book!
