I just love to read a book that is crawling with tropes, but does all the things I've come not to expect when I read this genre. It's honestly marvelous.
The Crown of Embers is the second book in Carson's Girl of Fire and Thorns series, and when we reunite with Princess Elisa, she's on unstable ground, politically speaking. Despite her triumph at the end of The Girl of Fire and Thorns, her kingdom remains in turmoil. It is suffering economically, and political intrigue is afoot. Externally, the world is closing in around her, and internally, Elisa doubts her abilities to lead. If only she could harness the power of her Godstone more effectively....
That's where we begin in The Crown of Embers. Elisa is overwhelmed, grieving, young, and lost. I loved her journey in this book because not only was it a journey book where once again we partake on a quest of sorts, but it was also an internal journey of personal growth and confidence. Where The Girl of Fire and Thorns took us across the desert, The Crown of Embers takes us underground and across the sea. Atmospherically, this is a much different book than the first book was, showing the vastness of Rae Carson's worlds and her skill at world building. Like in book one, her journey challenges her physically, mentally, and emotionally and she is forced to take on challenges above her skill set and needs to survive them. One of the things I really like about Rae Carson's writing is that she not only challenges her characters, but she allows them to struggle. Elisa doesn't overcome her obstacles lightly - there are consequences to her actions and she often comes out of scrapes with injuries. Even the magic has consequences here, which as a fantasy reader is so important to me and is becoming more and more difficult to find.
If you haven't already gathered this from raving reviews of Walk on Earth a Strangerand Like a River Glorious... I adore Rae Carson's writing and this year she's shot to the top of my favorite authors list. Her ability to take tired worlds and stories and make them fresh without falling into systematic traps is simple wonderful.
I'm struggling to find something to criticize about The Crown of Embers. I thought the twists were good - maybe not surprising, but completely satisfying. The writing was stellar, the character growth was steady and believable not only for Elisa, but for Mara and Hector and characters around her. The romance may have felt a little instalove-esque, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing or inaccurate. For one, Elisa turns seventeen at the beginning of this book. She's young and has had so much pain and instability. The emotional attachments she makes... made a lot of sense to me, and I sense that it will be a driving factor in the ongoing series rather than a tryst that distracts from the plot. The speed of the developing romance may irk some, which is why I mention it. For my part, though, I thought it was fine.
All in all, The Crown of Embers was a fantastic second book in the series. I liked it better than The Girl of Fire and Thorns and I'm so excited to have now TWO of Rae Carson's series that I'm reading, because I would read her grocery list honestly, I just love her characters, story structure, and world building so much. If you are a fan of popular fantasy series like the Grishaverse and Throne of Glass, this series is fantastic. Lighter on the romance, but with another impressive, strong, and flawed protagonist who's bound to take her world by storm.

10. 18.2019 || (3.5/5) it's books like this that make me think that if i was living in a fantasy world, i'd probably be the villain. i was really enjoying the book until the end. don't get me wrong, i still liked the book overall, but the choice elisa made about the zafira had me thinking, "wait so what was the point of this entire book." and that's not really a thought i like to grapple with after finishing a book. that said, i loved elisa's character even more in this book, and the slow-buildup of the romance was as frustrating as it was swoon-worthy.

Doch nicht alle sehen Elisa gerne als Königin, ein paar sässen lieber selbst auf dem Thron, und so befindet sich sie sich ständig in Gefahr. Obschon sie zum Glück gute Freunde an ihrer Seite hat, fühlt sie sich immer mehr überfordert und weiss nicht was sie tun soll. Besonders weil sie vermutet ihr Aufgabe als Trägerin noch nicht erfüllt zu haben...
meine Meinung:
Eigentlich war ich positiv überrascht, wie leicht es mir viel, direkt wieder in die Geschichte hinein zu finden. Ich hatte wirklich kaum Probleme mich daran zu erinnern, welche Rolle ein Charakter im ersten Teil gespielt hat oder ähnliches. Dennoch konnte mich die Geschichte anfangs irgendwie nicht richtig fesseln. Eigentlich ist die Geschichte auch am Anfang schon ziemlich actionreich, aber irgendwie hatte ich immer das Gefühl nicht wirklich weiter zukommen und das sich die Geschichte schon fast im Kreis dreht.
Ein weiterer Grund weshalb mich das Buch anfangs noch nicht komplett überzeugen konnte, war Elisa. Wie schon im ersten Teil hat es leider etwas gedauert, bis ich wirklich mit ihr warm geworden bin. In ihrem Versuch eine gute Königin zu sein macht sie viele Fehler, was natürlich menschlich ist, aber ich hatte das Gefühl sie zweifelte ständig nur an sich, ohne wirklich etwas zu tun. Dies ändert sich allerdings und spätestens nachdem Elisa das Schloss verlässt, wird sie wieder zu einer der tollsten Heldinnen, die es in Jugendbüchern gibt, sie ist selbstbewusst, stark und intelligent. Sie kennt ihr Schwächen, aber auch ihre Stärken, sie setzt sich für ihre Freunde ein und ist auch ihren Feinden gegenüber nie unfair.
Genauso wie sich Elisa ab einem gewissen Punkt verändert, mochte ich auch die Geschichte ab diesem Punkt mehr. Nicht das das Buch vorher schlecht gewesen wäre, eigentlich ist die Handlung fast durchgehend spannend, doch ab diesem Punkt bin ich vollkommen in der Geschichte und in der Welt des Buches versunken. Rae Carson schreibt wirklich toll und die Welt, die sie erschaffen hat ist wunderschön.
Ein weiterer Aspekt der Geschichte, der mich vollkommen überzeugt hat, sind die Nebencharaktere. Allen voran Sturm. Er ist ein sehr interessanter, vielschichtiger und mysteriöser Charakter und man wird eigentlich die ganze Geschichte nie wirklich schlau aus ihm, man weiss nicht einmal wirklich ober er Freund oder Feind ist. Ich mochte besonders alle Interaktionen zwischen ihm und Elisa, diese Szenen fand ich wirklich immer super interessant.
Doch auch Hector darf man natürlich nicht vergessen. Zwischen ihm und Elisa entwickelt sich mit der Zeit etwas, was über Freundschaft hinausgeht. Ich fand Hector ein super sympathischer Charakter und ich fand auch, dass er gut zu Elisa passt, da sich die beiden wirklich ebenbürtig sind. Dennoch war ich froh, dass sich diese Liebe nicht zu schnell entwickelt hat und Elisa Humberto auch nicht einfach vergessen hat, sondern auch manchmal an ihn denkt.
Ich finde das Cover, wie schon das zum ersten Teil, wunderschön und es passt auch wirklich zur Geschichte. Von der Farbgebung gefällt es mir sogar noch besser, als das Erste und ich finde es toll, dass passend zum Titel wirklich eine Feuerkrone darauf zu sehen ist. Auch der Titel passt eigentlich nicht schlecht, da der Name Feuerkrone eigentlich nicht schlecht zu Elisas Krone passt.
Fazit:
Obschon mich das Buch in der ersten Hälfte noch nicht komplett überzeugen konnte, mochte ich es insgesamt sehr und würde es allen Fans des ersten Teils empfehlen. Elisa ist eine Protagonistin, die man nicht so schnell vergisst und ich hoffe sehr im dritten Teil, schafft sie es mich von Anfang an zu überzeugen. Die Ausgangslage am Ende des zweiten Teils ist jedenfalls schon mal sehr vielversprechend.

The third and final book won't be left unread for long, I can assure you of that.

Book two in the series was a little less shocking but still absorbing and a great read. Elisa has so much growth in this book and she’s becoming what the kind of leader she never imagined she’d be. The godstone element seemed a little less prominent than book one and I’m looking forward to finding out the true destiny of Elisa being a bearer.
The storyline of Elisa and Hector had me all kinds of longing and I’m in that same position now. However, I both hated and loved where it ended because I’m in a queue for the next audio when ideally I’d love to just continue on.
I enjoyed the writing again and the characters were both complex and had twists in their characterisation which keeps things interesting. Roll on the culmination.

My favorite character of the series gets introduced (I'm so shocked I can actually say my fave is not in fact Hector...but he takes second place let's be real).

Lots of excitement in this book. In the first chapter alone there's action and danger. Elisa's life is further at risk from unknown angles, and she can't even trust her own council members.
I don't think I've ever felt as antsy for a couple to get together than I was for Elisa and Hector. It's so painfully obvious they're in love, but they're both too dutiful to their positions to admit it. I was left internally screaming for one of them to say it and get it over with.
I loved some of the imagery in this book, too. Some was gorgeous, others were intense (in a danger-filled way).

I give it two stars because of Tristan's and Iladro's sodomy (which wasn't needed for the plot). This alone made me disappointed with the book. The lady's shroud, too, was annoying. While I understand the possible need for it, if they (Elisa and Mara) have to use it because they think they might make love with the ones they love, it's irresponsible. If they don't want to become pregnant during a mission, they shouldn't be sharing a bed with a man in the first place.
