“Well well well, if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions” - Victor Frankenstein, probably.

There’s no doubt why this book is a classic - it created an entire genre, after all. The thing that struck me most about it was just how far ‘Frankenstein’ the pop culture figure has come from ‘Frankenstein’ the literary character. I opened the book expecting lightening, mad scientists, and angry villagers with pitchforks. What I got was a touching rumination on beauty and loneliness from the point of view of a melodramatic scientist who seems to constantly make the absolute worst choice he can in any given situation. Frankenstein IS the monster, indeed.

Meh. 3/5. Only today did I fully want to pick it up because of some events but mostly I was excited to see that I was almost finished with the book. It was an okay book. people were hyping it up had me hoping for too much and now I just have nothing lolz. Took me forever to read it because I dreaded picking it up unless I actually was in the mood to read

This book was very different from what I expected! The second half of the book picks up in pace and intensity quite a bit but the first part felt like a bit of a slog. At some points, I was reminded of how kids these days are underwhelmed when they watch the original Star Wars movies because all of the things that were phenomenally groundbreaking about those films have been built upon and exceeded in modern movies and seeing the original feels like you're watching a trope. Still, I'm really glad that I read it, because it truly is a groundbreaking and important book.

I loved the way that this was told! How it started with letter, then turned into a story and ended with letters! Such a great and eerie story! But I loved the part where we read from Adam's POV more than Dr. Frankenstein's POV. The writing is wonderful but it can be a bit confusing for some! The characters where great! But oh boi oh boi, I didn't like Victor at all! And I felt so much sympathy for Adam, poor poor Adam!
This is a classic that used be read!

I’m glad I read it, but I didn’t love it. I didn’t find it believable that Victor didn’t anticipate the monster killing his friend or new wife. There were too many coincidental and too many impossible things.
But I did find it an interesting lens. It questions the result of the drive to achieve without regard for the potential problems we might be creating. And it opens the door at least to exploring what we become without love.
