Если честно, в одном "Бенито Черено" или "Билли Бадде" содержания, по-моему, больше, чем во всем "Моби Дике". Местами, разумеется, книга гениальна, но боже, насколько она похожа на кита: крошечный мозг и огромная масса. Самое смешное, что бесконечные в жанре производственного романа и любительской биологии подробности в конце оказываются ни к чему: Моби Дик вообще не кит, а метафизическая сущность, на него не охотятся, а просто в нем тонут. Книга ценна как разминка перед другими вещами, более короткими, но и более интересными.

Unbelievably boring 

The name Moby Dick isn’t even mentioned till page 196. The first 200 pages are just a history on whaling with very detailed discriptions of every tiny aspect

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I had dreaded reading it, but when I finally did, I was astounded. The sweeping, terrifying yet extremely beautiful setting represents Melville's image of overarching sublimity. Highly recommend!!! Just stick with it.

Het is lang, het is gelaagd, het is complex, er passeren eindeloze wetenschappelijke verhandelingen gerelateerd aan walvissen en de nautiek, het is niet altijd eenvoudig te volgen wat er precies gebeurt, maar het is zó een ontzettend goed, leuk, grappig en bijzonder boek.

Toen ik het aan het lezen was kon ik me haast niet voorstellen dat ik het binnen enkele jaren zou gaan herlezen, maar ergens wil er iets in mij nu al opnieuw beginnen. Bezint eer ge begint, maar zeker een boek dat ik zou aanbevelen.
