Amor Towles

Emmett and his brother Billy are ready to set off for California to start a new life, when Emmett's two friends interfere and lead them on an adventure to New York. The beginning of this book totally caught my attention. I liked the character of Emmett and thought his backstory was very interesting. Towards the middle of the book I started to get a bit bored as things weren't really moving along and I couldn't see where it was all headed. But the last few chapters really made up for that slow part and I'm glad I stuck with it. I enjoyed all the descriptions of New York and the characters were well-drawn and interesting. I didn't like all the religious aspects, but that's a personal preference. I would definitely recommend this book and think it will be a big hit. Thanks @netgalley for the advance copy!

I liked the book.  As with many books nowadays, we have the same thing happening through the eyes of different characters.  I think the author did a good job on developing the characters and even though they had their flaws, there was something likable about them and you found out why they were the way they were.  I would definitely read read the other books by this author.

I love Amor Towles’ books. Taking the perspectives of each character with lots of backstories made me love each of them - except for Pastor John

This book did NOT need to be this long. And while I enjoyed some of the characters and some parts of the story captivated me, it was so unnecessarily long and meandering and the characters make some choices that are truly incomprehensible. All that said, overall I liked it, not sure that I'd recommend it to others though. Personally, I enjoyed the twist at the very end.

Fantastic writing and great storytelling, as I expected from the author of the (ever so slightly better?) A Gentleman in Moscow. Wise, satisfying and fable-like, with characters who will stay with me.
