This was a very captivating and compelling read for me. There were many lines that made me stop and think, that felt reflective and insightful to my own life. I can truly say this was unlike anything I've read before.

Wish I could do 4.5 stars, I loved everything and I was all in this book until the end. Why did they do Dutchess like that? Put him in the middle of the lake, knowing he couldn't swim, knowing the boat was damaged, knowing he would have reached for the money? I was all for distracting him but....idk. I just don't know how I feel about it. It like Emmett blamed him for Wooley's suicide but it wasn't his fault. This was a well written book and I absolutely loved the story line. I was invested in the characters and loved how I could be taken back to that time and era easily based on the descriptions. I need to find this author's other books!

Wasn't sure I would like the story telling style (shifting points of view), but it really worked. Was sorry to see it end.

3.5 stars. The overall story was unique and pulls you in but this author is always a little too wordy for me. I kept losing interest in the story.

It took me a bit to get into the story. It was interesting enough, but not riveting. I mostly felt sad for all of the characters. It’s one of those stories that you really need to dig into and look for the symbolism to really understand and appreciate.

I loved this book. I listened to an audio version, and I kept going on walks and bike rides so that I could continue doing so. The characters are so well defined and the plot so unexpected, that I had a hard time putting it down, eager to hear more. In some respects, it was like the written version of a Coen brothers movie. 2/3 the way through the book, I still didn’t know what it was about but still found it compelling.
