Mortimer’s promising debut will satisfy his loyal fandom as it is packed with his signature brand of fantastical mundanity. He has forged a career juxtaposing spectacle and humdrum, and that same approach proves problematic here. It’s a little too silly to be the palpable thriller that it does end up becoming. And it’s a little too grounded to be the escapist daydream that it ought to be.
3.5 stars. I really liked the narrator and also really liked the plot line once it got going in earnest, but it didn’t change my life and I wouldn’t specifically recommend it to anyone. Good solid entertainment, more of a boy book than a girl book.

You will be happy with what this book achieves for you. Starting off with the mundane but whimsical daily life of a fairly unremarkable man named gary at the beginning of having his life utterly uprooted when... well I can't really say but this book will make you laugh, cry and maybe talk to squirrels. The tender storylines given to characters aren't unwanted tangents and genuinely justify their personalities and just make you wish it had all gone differently and that somehow gary would stop being a total shithouse and finally accept his role as main character!
