i considered putting this book down for a bit because for a book that contained a bit of mystery it was pretty boring and i was not very engaged until maybe half way through. i found the main character almost unbearable at points. he had no personality and i don’t really think he had any development. he was incredibly naive and boring, and that may have been the point but i don’t think the plot made up for it in any way until the very end. however, the last few chapters really picked up and kind of saved it and there were little moments early in the book where i did truly enjoy it and found it charming and a little silly.

The plot wasn’t super engaging and there were definitely predictable elements. I found the structure of the book interesting as at the start of part 2 it swapped perspective but only for a few chapters and then swapped back again, so the perspective wasn’t consistent and the swapping of perspective felt too random and wasn’t used as best as it could have been as a plot device. There was potential, as I liked hearing Emily’s perspective, but we never stayed with her character’s POV long enough for things to actually get interesting. The characters felt more like caricatures than genuine people so I never really connected with any. The plot just didn’t hook me enough.
