This was great! You could feel the emotional trauma of Kai and his family and balancing the shifter aspect was done very well. I loved all the characters but Kai was my favorite. His learning to trust Rick and fall in love was great. Also, I really hope his witchy friend gets a happily ever after and as butt-kicking as she is meant to be! I look forward to reading more of this pack.

This was my first experience with Kiki Clark and Kirt Graves and I really enjoyed it. Clark has created a really unique world here – shifters but without the typical fated mates aspect, though it’s definitely instant attraction. While each book in the series follows the relationship of a couple giving them an HEA, there’s also a series story arc that runs throughout the books, so you’ll want to listen to them all and in order.

There’s a lot of world building going on but Clark does a good job of keeping it interesting and I didn’t feel like the pace was affected by it. While Rick & Kai are wolf- shifters – the Kincaid Pack is made up of various animals as well as seers and witches. I’m a fan of books with kids in them and while not exactly a “single dad” trope – Kai’s responsibility for his younger siblings definitely brings all of those feels to the story. I also like that the kids are not just convenient props, Clark has made them an integral and believable aspect.

There are some heavy elements in here such as abuse, violence, and some relationship angst. Tempered by a little bit of humor and new found family. I love the secondary characters as much as the main couple. While Rick and Kai get their HFN, the mystery surrounding attacks on the pack are just revealing themselves to be larger than anyone thinks. I’m definitely looking forward to Keiran & Bennett’s book, The Second and His Bonded.

Narration:
This is my first time listening to a narration by Kirt Graves and I’m absolutely in love with his style and voices. There are a LOT of characters in this book and Graves gives them all unique voices and personalities. My favorite part is that he performs each chapter in a voice corresponding to that character which makes it easy to keep track of perspective. He’s definitely being added to my “find more!” list of narrators.

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was introduced to Kiki Clark after reading her short story, Looking 4 Furever in the Heart2Heart Paranormal Anthology Volume 7 which I enjoyed so I decided to check out more of her books. I thought that this was a good start to the Kincaid Pack Series. Wow, everything that Kai, and his siblings Samantha, Callie and Henry had been through with was horrible. Their father and step-mother were not only abusive a*seholes but they also embezzled a lot of money from the pack. I thought Rick and Kai were great together and their chemistry was off the charts. I loved seeing how much Callie and Henry felt safe with Rick from the get go even when their older siblings were pretty sceptical, especially Samantha because of all the untrue stories that their so called father drummed into them about Alpha’s and Packs all as a reason to control them so they didn’t think that they could turn to anyone else for help or a way to escape.

It’s better the beast they know, than one that they don’t. Wow, there was a lot of action and adventure during this book. I loved seeing Kai take of the role of Alpha-Mate without really any thought as he saw how much of himself Rick gives to make sure his pack is safe and thriving, without really taking care of himself. It showed how much Kai had started to not only care about Rick but also view the Pack as his own. Rick surrounded himself with people that he trusts and I love that they weren’t afraid to call him on his sh*t. I also loved seeing Kai strengthen throughout the book as he was terrified when he first arrived but near the end of the book he wasn’t afraid to tell Rick when he was being an a*sehole. It showed that he trusted that Rick wouldn’t physically hurt him but emotionally is whole other thing. I’m looking forward to reading book two. It’s Rick’s second in command Bennett’s turn next. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

It was not for me. I did like Kai but Rick was not it. Eventhough the scent marking, mating and so on was not bad, I just didnt see any chemistry between them, especially at the beginning. I also didnt catch their ages, but it was obvious that their is a bigger age gap, especially with Rick calling him pup all the time made it really unconfortable for me. The Power dynamic was also just not it. I will not continue this series, eventhough it ended on a cliffhanger I have no interest finding out what happens next.

Enjoyed this.
Love characters being loved and cared for after an abusive past, and fated mates and scenting. Made me want to read more from the author.
Weird title?
Kirt Graves was good.

I went into THE ALPHA AND HIS KING with no expectations and I was just happy to be reading a shifter romance but this ended up being so good and I may have a new favorite author! Between the interesting pack politics and the sweet and sexy romance it was the perfect book for me. I did read the prequel novella from the author’s website first and it was a nice introduction to the Kincaid pack but it’s not required to understand this one.

It was really cool that the pack included not just shifters, but also humans, seers, and witches and I liked this dynamic. Rick has grown one of the most powerful packs in the country and he’s created a welcoming and safe place for misfits, loners, and those who are being mistreated or abused by their current packs.

The romance absolutely swept me up and I loved Kai and Rick’s relationship. Rick was a swoony alpha hero who was equal parts growly and soft. He’s dedicated everything to his pack and the way he cares for his people was so gentle. He’s truly a safe space for his pack to be vulnerable. Kai quickly sees this side of Rick but he’s had years of being told lies about alpha shifters so it takes time for him to trust. While this is a fated mates romance, things develop at a slower pace as Rick gives Kai time to grow and make connections in the pack. But when they do work things out they are so sexy and adorable together.

Also, I loved all the scent marking and pack bonding, it was really sweet. Of course a lot of this happens between Kai and Rick as a sign of their growing attraction but I also liked that the simple touch to a packmate’s neck could also be a sign of affection and protection from the alpha.

I especially adored Kai and it was great to see him grow from scared and worried about being kicked out to trusting this new pack and even finding his place in it. His age is never explicitly stated but I’m thinking he’s probably around 19-20 years old but his abusive upbringing has forced him to grow up fast while also keeping him sheltered in certain ways. I loved that he made connections in the pack outside of Rick because it showed that he was no longer isolated and he was finding his way as his own person.

There’s some shifter political intrigue that isn’t resolved by the end of this one and I’m really curious to see where things go in the rest of the series.

Content Warning: Kai’s father and stepmother were physically abusive and forced Kai and his siblings to live in the shed; references to other characters leaving abusive packs

Favorite Quotes:

“I’ve decided something else as well,” Rick said into his skin, his hot breath causing Kai to shudder in his arms.

“Oh?”

“Mmhmm.” Rick pressed a small kiss to the spot where Kai’s pulse raced. “It’s time someone took care of you for a change.”

This was a slow starter for me, it took me until about 40% to start getting into the plot and surrounding charatcers. But once I was in I loved it.

I loved Kai and Rick's relationship and how they were naturally D/s but were still such equal partners. I can't wait for the next one!
