The book premise intrigued me. It was a little bit different enough from other post-apocalyptic books I'd been reading as of late to appeal to me. I admit the beginning seemed to drag a bit. I wanted to know how both parents died. Once more was explained it got more interesting.

I think this book is a pretty realistic portrayal of what life in this situation would be like. I think it very likely that the average Joe wouldn't know the world news and how it played into the lack of energy/food resources we take for granted.

This would be an interesting read for a book club. I wouldn't mind reading a sequel with the same characters. Where are all the other people? Has no one else stuck around like these two women? What will the new house be like? In what other ways will things be substituted for everyday items? How will it be raising Burl without technology, medical help, et. al. In this book I could easily imagine myself and those around me.

Most of this book, I was sort of just hanging in there. I liked the characters well enough. I just sort of thought this would turn into getting rescued, things returning to a somewhat normalcy, etc..And then the last half and then the last quarter of the book blew my mind away. I ended the book in one of those blissful states. So good.

I initially started reading this book then set it aside. A few months later I picked it up again and devoured it. I am still thinking about this story.
