I read this for nostalgia. I remember reading and enjoying this book like 15ish years ago 👵
It didn’t really live up to my memory (which is apparently no memory whatsoever of the actual story, just that I read it and liked it at the time).
It was just okay for me this time around. While I do enjoy some YA books, it was hard for adult me to connect to the characters in this book.

This. Is. My. Fave. Book. Ever! I have seriously read this book over and over and over. I have NO idea why though. I mean John Green's writing style sucks me in like a black hole but the story isn't necesarily my normal kind of story. Maybe that's why I love it. Because it's like nothing I've ever read. The characters are so relatable and so REAL. And some of the things that happen in the book actually happened. Like the pranks and stuff. If you have not read this book I HIGHLY suggest dropping everything and finding a copy of this book. Of course, every time I let people borrow it, they have not come to the same conclusion as me. So don't go in thinking "this better be good or I'm gonna kill that chick." Because that hurts my feelings and scares me. Go in thinking, "What does this story offer to me?" How do I find the best stories? I randomly search shelves for good titles. One of my good friends lives in Alaska so I thought I'd give it a try. So much better than I could have dreamed. So don't anticipate. Just let it suck you in and spin you around.
I have so much to say about this book but there just aren’t enough words to describe my thoughts. It’s been 2 months since I read this book and I still think about it on a daily basis. I feel like way too many people don’t understand that this book is written from pudges perspective and therefore calling Alaska a manic pixie dream girl shows that you can’t get out of pudges way of thinking. Alaska is a person with very real feelings just like the rest of us. I’m not the author so I could be wrong but I think the intention of this book is to make people see how dangerous it is to mpdg someone. To show how Pudges missed the fact that Alaska was a depressed teenage girl and not his destiny. It’s the little signs of her mental state that he missed and only realizes later. So please for the love of god, break out of pudges mindset.
I strongly believe that I would devour this book at 13 but now, at 17, it was just alright.
This was my first book from John Green and it’s probably the last. His writing doesn’t really stand out to me anyhow and I feel like I’m not the targeted audience.
Nevertheless, I actually enjoyed reading it. It was short and quick. Some parts were actually very relatable and well thought out. The characters were written pretty well. I feel in love with Alaska and the whole group was so wholesome.
It was surprisingly very dark and I really liked how the book was divided into 2 parts.
I also loved the subplot surrounding the Great perhaps and Famous people’s last words. It was so refreshing and created more depth for the book.
The ending was just kinda meh. I guess I took the title too literally and thought it was gonna go a different way.
The tv show from 2019 actually did such a good job with adapting the book that I ended up enjoying it more. The friendship dynamic and grief was portrayed so well and the actors were amazing.
