This book touched me a way I don't think another will be able to anytime soon. When I picked it up I expected it to be sad but I wasn't ready for the heartbreaking experience it would give me and the tears I would cry near the end of the book. I rarely get so moved by a book and even more rarely cry but this one had me full on sobbing and even as I write this, I feel like crying again.
This book's beauty was in how tragic it was. It deals with grief, loss and all the ways one's mind betrays you when you've gone through too much. Eric was a character my heart kept hurting for. He's lost so much and in order to go through life, he fell into the trap of his mind without questioning it. He chose to believe what he saw without trying to find any logic or reason in it because living in an illusion was better than facing the reality.
For the entire book I kept wondering if Haru is an imagination or if there would be supernatural elements to it. So many things made me believe he could be a ghost and I didn't know if I want that to be the real so at least he would be real in some way, or if I wanted him to be an imagination just because there would be a chance for him to reunite with Eric at some point. I didn't get the answer till the end and when I did, everything made so much sense and I understood exactly why and what was happening.
What left my jaw on the floor was the plot twist revolving another character near the end. I didn't want to believe it and I was so heartbroken about it. But again, it made so much sense when the revelation was out and it was so heartbreaking. We find out that Eric's lost so much more than what we knew initially and suddenly, the state he's in begins making even more sense.
Eric, as a character, made me feel so much. I just wanted to give him a big hug and tell him it was all going to be okay. He's suffered so much, has gone through so much pain, and so many people were failing him while he was trying to hold onto them, desperate for someone to love and care for him the way his closest people have once done it. I understood where he was coming from, I could feel his despair and sadness and it all shuck me up.
I wasn't expecting the happiest of endings, by the way. Maybe one where we see that he's in a much better mental state and has achieved good things in his life. But the ending we got was so much better and it had me smiling like an idiot for the entire time. This book couldn't have concluded in any better way and I wanted to cry out of happiness this time. It's about ending that's so soothing after the pain the entire story gave me. I got what I was hoping for and I am so happy that Eric gets to have his happy ending with the person who kept him sane throughout the tough times without even knowing it.
For the entire time I thought the book would be 3.5/3.75 stars because while good, I needed something stronger to pull me in. And those last 10-20% of the book gave me exactly what I've been craving. It might not be a 5 star book but it's one of those books which will stay with me for a while and which I will remember in the future for sure. And I think that's more special than any 5 star rating.
I will surely be checking out Dustin's other book because I liked his writing and I want something similar to WHWH to make me FEEL.

The second hand embarrassment made me put the book down several times. Was not expecting that ending
