I don't remember much from this book, but it definitely made me feel super bubbly inside. One of the books that makes you fall in love with Cleary's writing

My favorite book when I was a teenager, read it again and again until it fell apart!

I love this book. It makes me want to wear a poodle skirt or sweater sets and put my hair in curlers and say words like "golly." Despite that the setting is obviously dated, Cleary is such a master that it seems eternally timeless.

It’s so cute! Omg, I sorta wish 1950’s ice cream shops were still a thing.

This wasn't ever really my favorite book by Beverly Cleary... and I know that I keep mentioning "now that I'm an adult" but it's really fitting because I notice so many things I didn't as a kid. This book is so nice. Nothing much happens, the troubles are so simple and easy. I had more difficult problems when I was 15, I spent most of my fifteenth summer trying to find a surgeon to operate on complicated, non-benign tumors. I am sure that teenage girls in 1956 didn't just have boy/girl problems... and it was a lot more nuanced than this book (and many others) made it out to be.

That being said, it's still a nice book and I am all for simply looking at things for what they were "back in the day". Sometimes sweet and simple romances are enjoyable. As modern readers, we expect too much from our books and movies... and if we don't get *something*, we are disappointed and pissed off with the writers. Especially if it's totally non-offensive.

But still... I find Jane more annoying than Shelley and Barbara and Ramona and Beezus. I don't know why, it's just one of those things that I can't explain. It doesn't take away from being a fun and enjoyable read. I just like it less than her other books.

*Edit*

Something I missed with my edition was the illustrations in the book. Silly, I know but they always add something more to the stories, I think.
