Wonderful Gothic tale that grips you and won't let you go. It has a lot of similarities with the novel Mexican Gothic, which I enjoyed but La Hacienda is more approachable.

A brilliantly written story that was more than a gothic tale. It was a story of self discovery and acceptance.

About the book

After the death of her father Beatriz is forced to live with family who are not treating her very well. She meets a wealthy widower one night and realizes he could be her way out, and give her a better life. When he proposes she gladly accepts, and he brings her to his house in the countryside. Soon she meets his sister who is not fond of her, and she feels the hacienda is not what it seems. Father Andrés is willing to help her, and together they try to learn the truth about the house …..

My thoughts about the book

The book reminded me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier somehow, but it absolutely has its own character. It is a historical novel and has Mexican culture and religion which I loved, gothic traditions, it’s dark and it’s scary, which I realize now that I finished it at 1 am and need to try to sleep
