as a general rule of thumb, i don't do period pieces. anything set prior to the 1950s just feels so disconnected from my little modern brain. but The Hacienda is an exceptional read - it's fast-paced, beautifully written, and, above all, SCARY at points. seriously, i rarely ever get this feeling from horror books, but the little tickle of dread that wormed into my brain at points while reading this was undeniable.

also, romance. the *perfect* amount of romance!

5 stars, totally unexpected banger.

I was not satisfied with this ending and would have appreciated a little more depth for backstories of Juana, Catalina, and maybe even Rudolpho

Good Gothic horror. Both human and supernatural villains. Engaging. Suffocating. Not a five star review though bc parts felt very inauthentic as though someone very far removed from the times wrote it. I mean, we are, but some more research might have helped.
