Wonderful!  I love this series.  The Serpent Sea features what I loved about its predecessor: an incredibly rich and complex world that feels like no other.  In the Raksura, the novels center a totally non-humanoid species; both individuals and their culture/society are nuanced and multi-faceted and simultaneously completely otherwordly and entirely believable.  The core plot for this installment is a quest, and along the way the reader gets to know some of the secondary characters from the first novel in more detail.  I didn't find this one quite as impactful as the opening novel in the series personally, but it is absolutely a worthy successor to The Cloud Roads and a great read in its own right.  Looking forward to continuing the series.

Note: While this novel is pretty self-contained in terms of its plot, it is worth noting that it really won't make a ton of sense if you haven't read The Cloud Roads first because the story of that novel is absolutely vital to understanding the motivations and relationships of the characters in this one.

I enjoyed this more than the first book, probably because I’m now caught up with how the general world works so I can enjoy the story more. The city on the Leviathan and events that happened there were so unique, Wells is a wildly creative and imaginative writer
