This book should be read solely for the dialogue. Even the opening scene's dialogue is a perfect example of sexy, musical and entertaining art.
Bukowski? Belane? They are absolutely insane and I like it! I loved the S.O.B!!
Another classic from the man himself. May not be the usual character, but the book is full of the usual pearls of wisdom from the original barfly
My favorite movie on the face of the planet for the last 8 or 9 years has been "the Big Lebowski." I also read the screenplay to "Intolerable Cruelty," which was a mediocre movie, but a pretty rad script. Anyway, I later read "Pulp," and I know the Coens must have also at some point, because even bits of "Raising Arizona," and some other stuff they've done seems to have the same vibe that this oft-overlooked Bukowski novel does. It is really funny, and bizarre, and if you like those movies, and like, or think you might like Bukowski, read this one. You can probably read it in a few hours, and I'm a slow reader. I remember trying to finish it before the library closed on the day I left college for the summer. Suffice it to say, I did.
The final Buk novel. A fun romp. He was consistent to the end. Silly but funny and never boring.
What?! So, I read Ham on Rye and loved it, but this was just too out there, like a badly written David Lynch film. I know his mind was going when he wrote thi so I can understand, but definitely not the best representation of his work.

As the fourth Bukowski novel I’ve read (after reading Post Office, Factotum, and Ham on Rye) Pulp has made its way to the top of the list as my favorite. Biggest reason is the sheer achievement of this book going to places you will never expect. After getting comfortable in the world of Henry Chinaski this one threw me for a loop in a successfully different way. From what seems like an ordinary Bukowski story upon the first few pages turns into a surreal, dream-like adventure that left me turning the pages.
I never expected something like this to come from Bukowski which I suppose is the beauty of taking time to read multiple works from a single author who wrote at various stages of life. The story has elements of science fiction and at times you wonder if what is happening is actually real or a dream or a hallucination. The story is so ridiculous its almost funny but still kept me believing in it and I’ll definitely be rereading sometime soon.
