It’s a sketch comedy that you’d see only if the actor was really selling it and then everyone would winner why you keep watching it. The last 50 pages changed into a more lethargic pace but with larger strides. There’s no point to this story, but most pulps are just that and that’s this.

What in the hell did I just read?!? This is the most out of left field book I’ve ever read. A decent read though. Very entertaining. Extremely strange.

"Often the best parts of life were when you weren’t doing anything at all, just mulling it over, chewing on it. I mean, say that you figure that everything is senseless, then it can’t be quite senseless because you are aware that it’s senseless and your awareness of senselessness almost gives it sense. You know what I mean? And optimistic pessimism.”

Took me so long to finish it.
It was just not my thing.

my first ever bukowski! allowing myself some context, this novel was written during the pulp era, as well as this bukowski’s last novel. so i have no other opinions on his other writings to compare to. i do know he writes quite the depressed, sex-addict, white man, and it’s very controversial for good reasons. look him up!
but the review, this novel very much felt like bukowski-fied pulp. main character has the usual bukowski traits of depression, alcoholism, objectification of women, and overall awful white man (like all). but as pulp goes, i enjoyed it. the characters flaws gave pulp a layer outside of the crime plot taking place, and bukowski put some science fiction aspect that gave me vonnegut vibes. i feel like because this character isn’t portraying bukowski’s usual alter ego its much more tame. so it could be a great start or an awful start to his writing who knows. i think i read a review on famous competitor app goodreads that said it was bad so maybe listen to them.
