This is still a ridiculous fantasy book franchise based on a video game, and I love it for its ridiculousness. At no point should the reader expect depth, or meaning, or profound insight into the characters' psyche. There are humanoid preying mantises on giant winged rats invading a thinly-veiled fantasyland Finland. Just roll with it.
