pacing was terribly off, dialogue was cheesy and unrealistic, plot was a mess.

This book was a scrumptious ya sci-fi romance novel! Loved the rep in here and how the author used the many worlds to highlight inequalities between classes, gender, races as well as addressing stereotypes. This book also remembered to balance itself with plenty of cuteness and downtime moments, allowing the characters to discover themselves and eachother, and to grow.

Finally finished this (unofficial) trilogy which I read completely out of order. I really liked this one and it had everything I’ve come to expect from Alechia’s books: romance, music, food, mentions of books, and ofc a kickass heroine

If I hear of a fat protagonist, I pick up the book, and Joy is a lovely fat protagonist. There is so much promise in the premise of this book, but it didn't totally deliver for me. I like the idea of trying to settle class struggles through the Kindred pairing of a lower class individual with an upper class individual, but we don't get more than just that the lower class peoples' experience is very different from the higher class and that's bad. Given, this is a YA book, so perhaps I shouldn't expect as much nuance as The Fifth Season. However, I think the bones of a really interesting exploration of colonization and class inequity appear in this book. It doesn't quite get there, but I kept reading. It was enjoyable, but not as sci-fi as I wanted it to be.
