Read this with my son, age 9. This is the beginning of a new story arc for Max and Lia as they are approached by Ko, a member of the mysterious sea ghost species, seeking help for his people against the evil Professor.

Max and Lia travel to a subterranean hidden world and are immediately thrown back into their conflict with the Professor, who has a massive mechanical spider guarding a secret prison.

The beginning of the story was heavy on worldbuilding; it looks like this whole arc takes place in the sea ghosts' realm. The sea ghosts themselves are a fun addition to the world. They have some interesting abilities, and the mistrust that exists between them and the merryn make for a good starting point for character interactions.

The fight with Shredder, the mechanical spider, is one of the better battles in terms of action from the various Adam Blade books I've read with my son. There were a few places where continuity could have been better, though. Max suffers a wound in the fight that never gets mentioned once the action is done.

The ending felt rushed, and it seemed like the book ran out of space to properly wrap up some of its plot threads.
