I am so conflicted about this review. On the one hand, she poured out her heart and had some really interesting introspections and musings. On the other hand— she is so steeped into fatphobia and diet culture that it seeped out of every pore of this book.
She is allowed to do whatever she wants with her body. But, so much of this book talks about her journey to get healthy— but then promotes a calorie deficit and overexercising— which are super unhealthy.
She also makes a lot of fatphobic jokes and seems to equate health with just the size of her body— something that is demonstratively false.
But, on the other hand, she is so incredibly vulnerable in this book. She talks, openly, about her abusive father, infertility, IVF, her journey to find love, and a million other semi taboo subjects that should be talked about! The flaws of the author should not preclude ALL other aspects of this book— but they do!
So, if you’re a Rebel fan— definitely worth a read. I learned so much about her and really appreciate her vulnerability.
But, if you are a fat person, in active ED, or in any other way harmed by fatphobia— please steer clear! I was so triggered by so many things she talked about— it’s crazy.
I also want to clarify that in no way is Rebel now being in a smaller body some sort of slight or problem. She is still the funny, talented person she was before she lost the weight— it’s just that her rhetoric could be incredibly harmful for someone who is in active ED. It’s obvious that so much of diet culture and fatphobia has harmed Rebel and for that I am truly sorry. I hope she knows that her body was beautiful before and it is beautiful now.

Pretty par for a memoir.
It was fun to hear about her recording Pitch Perfect. But also, some celebs tried to exploit her.
Ended with her getting engaged to her now wife, and the birth of her baby.
Go Rebel!
