Great Viking/British story. Don't tell my Catholic Grandparents but this book made me want to run off and become a Pagan Heathen.

The book starts well with a lot of potential and I really like the setting. However, it falls a bit flat. The biggest flaw is that the author violates the core principle of "show don't tell". This book has a huge amount of telling and little showing. For example, Brita is a character with huge potential yet she is completely undeveloped. Her relationship with Uhtred is barely described and I think only one or two actual conversations are in the book despite the fact that they are supposed to be best friends.

This is true of all the characters and I honestly wouldn't be able to describe the qualities of any of them in any detail. This even seeps into the battle scenes and Uhtred sees people very close to him die and is almost killed several times, yet there is little or no reaction from him.

Overall an entertaining book that has unfortunately little depth.

It’s a nice experience to view Danes and English through the lenses of Uhthred. He takes us with him along his journey.
