I really hope that this is eventually developed further for a novel or Jordan Peele style movie. It's a great set of bones. A Lovecraftian sort of monster that would have loved Lovecraft, a hero to terrify Lovecraft--everything a magical realistic book needs!

This is the first book I've read by P.Djeli Clark, even though my library has The Black God's Drums, which is another scifi that twists the past. The worst thing about Ring Shout is the KKK hood on the book cover--I hated looking at that image on my car's screen while listening to this book. But it definitely gets a reaction. Maryse is a monster hunter--she hunts the Ku Kluxes that terrorize the Jim Crow South. I'm really starting to fall in love with novellas and how masterful writers can pack so much into a little book. The worldbuilding here is fantastic and what a great book for 2020.

Overall the book keeps you on your toes with its mostly fast pace. But it lacks cohesion at times and left me scratching my head in certain areas trying to understand what was going on. Otherwise an entertaining read
