Wow, this was an amazing story. The heroine grows up as a slave on a plantation, lives to see the end of the civil war and experiences freedom during the post civil war south. Her journey was heartbreaking and raw. What’s even more remarkable is this was based on the author’s own family.

This book was set during pre-civil war, during the civil war, and post civil war. It follows a slave family through a couple generations with a heroine of Vry (?) It took a while for me to get into the book, otherwise I would have given it four stars. It really gave me a new perspective about the civil war and how black americans were affected pre and post war. I will never look at it the same again.

One of the best books I have ever read - the ending was joyful and I loved how the author ended the book. Every page was written beautifully and painted a picture in my head of the life of Vyry and her family. Even though the history of slavery was horrible and dark, it made me realize how strong willed the black race is and how they thrived for a better life and worked hard to provide foe their family in spite of the white mans hate. Margaret Walker is an amazing author and I cant wait to read more of her books. I wish there was a sequel to this book so I can read more about Vyry and her family.

Excellent, especially as an accompaniment to Gone With the Wind. I especially enjoyed the last third about Reconstruction.
