I read this book from the 27th to 28th of January as part of the Dymocks reading challenge for 'book with nature on the cover'. This book was okay, clearly it was meant for a younger audience and it was even in my school’s grade 8 curriculum! i think i may have been tired reading it because some parts i just didn’t understand and had to read over many times. I am also in a stage of reading many under-average books so i was getting quite sick of it. there was virtually no dialogue so it was easy to lose interest. The character in this book was very well developed though and his thoughts and actions were so developed and well written. I feel like i would have loved this book if i was 8 (i’m 18 now). I was very sick of reading this book in the first few chapters but i have to say, the last 3 chapters i was hooked.
when he tried to get to the emergency bag i was rooting for him and wanted to know so badly what happened. he waited to get the bag but i was like nooo go now
. so yeah it was okay.

I would LOVED this book if I'd read it as an eleven year old. I still enjoyed it as an adult, though maybe not quite the same way. It made me realize that while younger me would have wanted to prove that I could survive the same kind of situation, older me would prefer not to have to! If I have to be in survival situation now, I'd prefer the community kind like in [book:Defiance: The Bielski Partisans|542083] instead of the 'just me and my hatchet in the wilderness' kind.

And while my personal reflections may not be the most relevant way to review this book, it is perhaps relevant that this is the kind of book that may make you consider what sort of person you are, in addition to being an engaging story.
