Set between the first and second books, this story fleshes out some of the details around Binti dealing with her grief and finding her place at the university. This is more about character study than anything else, but it is well written and adds context to the last two books in the series.

I wanted to like this, I really did. And I didn't hate it. But I wanted to like it more than I did. Because Binti is amazing, but this feels... out of place? It explains a little about how Binti copes with what's been done to her, and her body, without her consent, but it also feels like the way she lashes out, then retreats doesn't really offer any explanation for how she can feel so close to Okwu, one of the Meduse, the alien race that changed her, but also harbor so much anger or resentment towards what was done.
And while it's resolved, a little, it doesn't really feel like it was explored.
I'm also confused by the introduction of a trans character, Haifa, as I can't remember her from Binti: Home, and yet she seems to important to Binti's recovery here. I also can't remember the Bear, and she also seems to be important to Binti's recovery, so overall, a lot of aspects of this just... didn't make sense to me because it's all going to go away or be ignored, so what was the point?
Very glad I got the trilogy from the library instead of buying it; I might have purchased the story alone for a buck, but it would cost four even as a Kindle book, and this story alone isn't worth four dollars as I own the first two of the novellas signed, and the last one in paperback even though it isn't signed.

This short story showed the aftermath of what Binti had to go through in the first book.
All her grief, PTSD and struggles from being so far from home.
I don't have a lot to say, just that it was beautiful and heartbreaking.
