Well my first review didn't save :(

I really didn't know anything other than this was a book about revenge when I started. And the only other Dumas I had read was The Three Musketeers, a very different book.

I struggled a little in the first third, it is a very slow paced book and Dumas loves his descriptions. Then in the seconded third I was confused and felt it was weirdly disconnected (don't worry it does end up connecting). But in the final third it really picked up speed, and I struggled to put it down. While the pacing was occasionally a bit hard for me I really did enjoy the book throughout. I know that the fact the book doesn't pick up speed till the end (especially in so large a book) can be off-putting for some but I do recommend sticking with it!

The revenge was often very intense and difficult to read but I thought it was a really interesting look into the human psyche and why people do what they do. I was happily surprised that it also delved into the good of people and the lengths people will go to for that good and that sometimes you can be surprised by how a redemption can come around (it's not often so don't expect that).

the grandfather of sassy men. what a messy book. love it. didn’t love a lot of elements. justice for ali! the sheer amount of adult minor relationships were disgusting, book could've been much much much shorter but it also wasnt intended to be read in 8 days. but i do love seeing the origins of infamous tropes. that was cool.
