An epic story full of romance, adventure, and drama! While a large read, I found myself fully immersed in the story and our wide cast of characters! I was interested, I was scared, I was happy, and I was sade while reading this. I’m surprised this hasn’t been adapted to TV yet. I recommend a read; don’t let the size deter you.

In a book that is so dark for the majority of its (very numerous) pages, I found the ending to be incredibly hopeful and joyous. Although the romantic in me hoped

that Dantes and Mercedes would end up together

. Surprisingly, I found very little of this book to be superfluous; indeed, it was very satisfying to watch the Count weave his complicated web of revenge. I found myself rooting for unlikely heroes, and marveling at the tangled mess where these characters lives had intertwined. I was also utterly surprised and delighted to see two queer characters who find a happy end in this book! Altogether worth the read, even though it was a long time coming for me.

The protagonist keeps a slave who is often referred to with racist terms. The protagonist is written like a hero, so the fact he has a slave (who he dehumanizes) is very uncomfortable. There is also quite a lot of orientalism. As for the sexual assault,

there is a story told where a woman is taken by bandits and raped. She is also then killed by her lover, which the book portrays as a mercy killing. This is very upsetting. There is also an attempted abduction with intentions to rape after, although the girl is saved.

Torture is a theme in the book at times although I cannot remember if it ever gets graphic (I am fairly certain it doesn't.), the book is quite misogynistic in nature on how the female characters are treated

(such as one being portrayed as unfaithful for marrying a man after her lover was imprisoned for years and she literally thought he was dead.)

Suicide is a theme throughout the book including suicidal thoughts and various attempts. There are characters who also do go through with it.

My absolute favourite book of all time. Dumas is a master at writing slowly-unraveling plots, and I am in a perpetual state of rereading it despite its length.
